RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team will host Alabama A&M in its home opener on Thursday night at McBrayer Arena. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
The Lady Colonels opened the 2013-14 campaign last weekend with a tour through Ohio, defeating Miami (Ohio), 59-55, on Friday before falling at Kent State, 75-74, in overtime on Sunday.
Senior
Marie Carpenter scored 53 points over the two-game road trip and became the 23rd member of EKU's 1,000-points club on Friday at Miami. The Nashville native dropped 27 points on the RedHawks and knocked down the game-winning three-pointer with 22 seconds on the clock. She poured in 26 two days later at Kent State and sank three jumpers in the final two minutes of regulation that either tied the game or untied it, including a field goal with five seconds on the clock that sent it into overtime.
Fellow senior
Pilar Walker made her first career starts on the road trip and was effective running the point, scoring 13 points in Friday's win and a career-high 16 points in Sunday's loss. She also dished out seven assists over the weekend.
A trio of sophomores –
Shelly Harper,
Miranda Maples and
Jasmine Stafford – rounded out the Lady Colonels' starting lineup on the road trip. Harper (14) and Stafford (10) recorded career highs in points on Sunday at Kent State, while Harper grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in both games.
Alabama A&M arrives in Richmond with a record of 0-1. The Lady Bulldogs were defeated by Ohio Valley Conference foe Southeast Missouri, 76-64, on Friday. Jasmine Sanders recorded a double-double in the losing effort, scoring 15 points and pulling down 14 boards.
Thursday's game will be the first-ever matchup between EKU and Alabama A&M.
Following Thursday's game, the Lady Colonels will hit the road to face UNC Asheville on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. EKU shot 49 percent from the field in a dominating 67-47 win over the Bulldogs last year at McBrayer Arena.
UNCA beat Furman, 68-65, on a last-second three-pointer from half court on Saturday. The Bulldogs will face Wofford on Thursday before hosting EKU over the weekend.
