RICHMOND, Ky. – A list of Ohio Valley Conference Tournament seeding scenarios exist as the Eastern Kentucky women’s basketball team enters the final weekend of the regular season.
With two games remaining on the schedule, the OVC East-leading Lady Colonels (17-8, 11-3 OVC) have a shot to win their first regular season conference title since 2004-05; however, they could also end up as the No. 5 seed and burdened with the task of playing on the first day of the conference tournament (March 6). Any seed between No. 1 and No. 5 is also a possibility. The top-four seeds in the tournament receive a first-round bye.
First up for EKU is Tennessee Tech (16-11, 10-4 OVC), the second-place team nipping at the Lady Colonels’ heels in the OVC East. Tip is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m. ET.
TTU, a traditional conference power, leads the all-time series with Eastern, 61-22; however, the Lady Colonels defeated the Golden Eagles, 61-55, at McBrayer Arena on Feb. 18 to take sole possession of the top spot in the division. Junior
Marie Carpenter knocked down four three-pointers in that game and led all scorers with 18 points.
Thursday’s pivotal matchup pits the top shooting team in the conference against the top defensive team in the conference. TTU comes into the game shooting 42 percent from the field as a team, while EKU is currently stifling opponents to just 35 percent from the floor.
Diamond Henderson leads the Golden Eagles at 16.1 points-per-game, while Jala Harris contributes 12.9 points-per-game.
Following Thursday’s game, EKU will close out the regular season at Tennessee State on Saturday, March 2, at 6:30 p.m. ET. TSU (11-14, 7-7 OVC) is coached by former Lady Colonel head coach and EKU Athletics Hall of Famer Larry Joe Inman.
Eastern leads the all-time series with TSU, 36-15, and the Lady Colonels defeated the Lady Tigers, 62-54, in their only previous matchup this season at McBrayer Arena on Jan. 28. Kessi Hess is TSU’s go-to scorer, averaging 12.4 points-per-game.
A pair of EKU seniors enter the final weekend of the regular season with career milestones on the horizon.
Alex Jones pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds in the Lady Colonels’ most recent win over Austin Peay, and she is now just seven rebounds shy of 1,000 for her career and 35 rebounds shy of breaking the EKU career record.
Brittany Coles, meanwhile, is nine points shy of joining Jones as the 22nd member of EKU’s prestigious 1,000-points club.
The OVC Tournament will be played March 6-9 at Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium. For ticket information, contact the EKU ticket office at (859) 622-2122.
