PADUCAH, Ky. – For the second straight year, the Eastern Kentucky University women’s tennis team captured the Ohio Valley Conference championship as the Colonels rolled past No. 2 seed Jacksonville State Sunday afternoon, 4-0.
EKU (19-6) went undefeated in league play in 2013 to tally its third overall title in the last five years. All six players in the singles line-up will return again next year. Today’s championship line-up featured four sophomores, including OVC Player of the Year
Amandine Faouzi, and two juniors.
After Eastern easily won the doubles point, sophomores
Kristina Labeja (No. 2) and
Melissa Gerritsen (No. 4) proceeded to win their respective singles matches in straight sets. Junior
Milena Poffo clinched the championship with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.
Eastern Kentucky now advances to the NCAA Tournament. The Colonels will find out their opponent on Tuesday, April 30 on NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m.
