MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Two big innings doomed the Eastern Kentucky baseball team in an 11-3 loss to Alabama State on Sunday. ASU won the three game series 2-1.
Alabama State (2-1) took control with nine runs combined in the third and fourth innings. Back-to-back RBI doubles in the second inning by
TJ Alas and
Kyle Nowlin staked the Colonels (1-2) to a 2-1 lead. A one-out RBI ground out in the third by freshman
Ben Fisher extended the Eastern advantage to 3-1.
ASU tied the score on an RBI single by Emmanuel Marrero in the third. Dillon Cooper's two-run double gave the Hornets the lead for good. Marrero and Branden Castro had run scoring singles for Alabama State in a four-run third inning that put the home team in front 10-3.
Alas finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for EKU. No other Colonel had multiple hits, but as a group drew seven walks.
Marrero had three hits in four at bats for ASU. He also scored twice and drove in two. Cooper was 1-for-2 with a run and three RBIs.
Myles Scott (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing six runs, five of which were earned, on six hits in three innings on the mound. He walked three and struck out three.
Matt Lynch gave up four runs on four hits in one-third of an inning. Tyler Howe picked up the win after tossing four innings of scoreless relief. He walked one and struck out two.
The Colonels are scheduled to play at No. 8 Louisville on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
