RICHMOND, Ky. – All eight runs allowed by Eastern Kentucky came with two outs on the board as Murray State marched to an 8-3 victory on Friday at Turkey Hughes Field.
The Thoroughbreds (23-28, 14-15 OVC) drew first blood with Michael Hargrove's RBI single in the top of the first. However, the Colonels (23-31, 11-18 OVC) answered in the bottom of the inning beginning with
Bryan Soloman's triple that brought home
Kyle Nowlin.
Sean Hagen followed with an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game. Nowlin's RBI triple in the second extended the lead to 3-1.
Back-to-back, two-out solo home runs by Anthony Bayus and Kollin Dowdy in the top of the fifth allowed Murray State to tie the score. Matt McGowan's two-out RBI double in the sixth put the visitors on top 4-3. Dowdy's second home run, another two-out solo shot, extended the lead to two in the top of the seventh.
Bayus finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Dowdy's only two hits in five at bats were his two home runs. Brock Downey (9-3) earned the win after tossing a complete game. He allowed three runs on eight hits, did not walk a batter and struck out eight.
Nowlin, Soloman and Hagen all went 2-for-4 for Eastern Kentucky. Starter
Ben Gullo (2-2) gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings on the mound. He walked one and struck out two.
The 2014 season ends for the Colonels on Saturday when the two teams close out the series at 1 p.m.
