RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team will head to west to face Ohio Valley Conference foes UT Martin and Southeast Missouri this weekend.
The Colonels will face defending conference champion UT Martin on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. They will square off against Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
EKU (5-6, 0-1 OVC) dropped its OVC opener at home to Austin Peay on Saturday, 81-71. Sophomore
Michaela Hunter poured in 26 points in the loss, while junior
Shameekia Murray added a career-high 22 points. Hunter and Murray are the first Colonels to score 20 or more points in the same game since Hunter (20) and Marie Carpenter (29) did so at Austin Peay on Feb. 22, 2014.
Following Saturday's performance, Hunter ranks fifth in the league in scoring at 15.3 points-per-game. She leads the OVC in free throw percentage (92.0).
UT Martin (5-9, 1-0 OVC) lost some firepower from its dominant teams of the past couple years, but the Skyhawks still went on the road and soundly defeated OVC favorite Belmont, 85-68, on Saturday in Nashville.
Ashia Jones leads UTM at 18.1 points-per-game and 6.2 rebounds-per-game this season.
Saturday's game will be the 50
th all-time meeting between EKU and UTM. Eastern leads the series, 30-19, but UTM has won 10 straight. The Colonels have not defeated the Skyhawks since Dec. 5, 2009.
SEMO (7-8, 0-2 OVC) has had a rough start to conference play, losing to Belmont, 62-39, on Jan. 1 before losing to Tennessee State, 62-55 on Jan. 3.
Jasmine Robinson paces the Redhawk offense at 12.1 points-per-game.
EKU leads the all-time series with SEMO, 29-15. The Colonels have won three straight over the Redhawks, including a 75-56 victory last year at McBrayer Arena. Junior
Miranda Maples posted a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds) in that game.
Following this weekend, EKU returns home to host Eastern Illinois (Jan. 15) and SIUE (Jan. 17).
