EKU Set For Hughes Bros. Challenge

WILMINGTON, N.C. –
The EKU baseball team will head eastward this weekend for the Hughes Brothers Challenge at Brooks Field hosted by University of North Carolina Wilmington.
 
The Colonels will play four games against teams that won at least 33 games each last season.
 
First up for EKU (1-3) will be Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday. VCU (2-1) won 40 games last season and advanced to a NCAA Super Regional. The Rams started their season off with wins against Kennesaw State and Georgia State before falling to Georgia Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
 
Eastern has a double-header on Saturday, starting the day off against host UNC Wilmington. The Seahawks (3-0) won 41 games last season on their way to a NCAA Regional. UNC Wilmington has picked up wins against Western Carolina, St. John's and Richmond so far this season. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
 
The Colonels will not get much time to rest as they are set to take the field against South Dakota State at 6:00 p.m. in Saturday's second game. The Jackrabbits (0-4) won 33 games last season. SDSU comes in winless after facing 20th ranked Mississippi State and Florida Atlantic.
 
EKU wraps up the weekend with another game against SDSU, set to get underway at 10:00 a.m. Sunday.
 
Mandy Alvarez is leading the way for Eastern with a .438 batting average. The senior went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs in a 13-7 win against Lipscomb on February 19.
