NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky will try to keep the momentum gained by beating No. 13 Mississippi State and Alabama A&M on the road this week going when the Colonels step back into Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend at Belmont.
The series opener is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. ET. Saturday and Sunday's games will begin at 2 p.m. ET.
EKU overcame a 12-6 deficit in the eighth inning and scored the final 10 runs in a 16-12 victory at No. 13 Mississippi State on Tuesday. One day later, Eastern pulled away from Alabama A&M for an 11-6 win.
The Colonels have scored 10 or more runs in eight of their 17 games this season, but totaled just five runs in three conference games last weekend against Southeast Missouri. In its two games this week, EKU scored 27 runs while hitting .329. Eastern also drew 14 walks and had a .448 on-base percentage in those two games.
Five Colonels have hit .500 this week, led by
Mandy Alvarez. The nation's leader in hits this season is 6-for-12 with two home runs, five RBIs and five runs scored in the last two games.Â
Doug Teegarden leads the country in walks. In two games this week he has a .750 on base percentage. The senior shortstop is 2-for-4 with seven walks and three runs scored.
The Eastern Kentucky pitching staff was strong last weekend against OVC preseason favorite Southeast Missouri. In three games, the Colonels had a 3.30 ERA.
Friday's pitching match-up will feature EKU junior right-hander
Eric Nerl (2-0, 2.25 ERA) against Belmont senior Aaron Quillen (2-1, 3.00 ERA). Game two will pit sophomore
Hunter Dunn (1-2, 5.21 ERA) against freshman Casey Queener (1-1, 4.74 ERA). Junior lefty
Alex Hamilton (1-2, 4.84) will go against sophomore Tyler Vaughn (2-0, 5.40 ERA) in the series finale.
Hamilton is coming off a quality start against SEMO. He allowed four hits while tossing seven scoreless innings.Â
