RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky will be looking to earn an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament bid when the Colonels wrap up the regular season with a three-game series at Tennessee Tech beginning Thursday.
Due to expected poor weather, the teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday. The series finale is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Saturday.
The Colonels (24-28, 13-14 OVC), under first-year head coach
Edwin Thompson, have already surpassed last year's total of 21 wins and 12 conference victories. However, EKU enters the final week of the regular season tied for seventh in the OVC, one game behind sixth-place Tennessee Tech and two games behind fifth-place Belmont. The top six teams in the league advance to the postseason tournament.
The Golden Eagles (28-22, 14-13 OVC) have won each of their last two OVC series, including winning two of three at home against first place Southeast Missouri.
The match-up will feature three of the premier offensive players in the conference. Seniors
Kyle Nowlin and
Mandy Alvarez of Eastern Kentucky and freshman Kevin Strohschein of Tennessee Tech.
Nowlin is tied for the national lead with 19 home runs, is ninth with 50 walks and 31st with 56 RBIs. The outfielder is batting .301 this season with a .443 on-base percentage and 44 runs scored.
Alvarez leads NCAA Division I baseball with 92 hits. He is sixth in the nation with 145 total bases, has the 11th-best batting average (.411) and is 37th with 55 RBIs. The third baseman ranks among the top-10 in the conference in hits, average, total bases, RBIs, slugging (.647) and home runs (12).
Strohschein is batting .401 with 13 home runs, 68 RBIs and 53 runs scored.
