RICHMOND, Ky. – The women's tennis team lost 4-1 to visiting Marshall on Sunday at the Tom Higgins Tennis Courts.
 
The Thundering Herd (11-8, 1-0 C-USA), ranked 55th in the nation, lost one set on their way to winning two doubles matches and the doubles point.
 
A Marshall injury allowed the Colonels (7-9, 3-2 OVC) to tie the match with Laura Argente's victory at No. 2 singles.  However, MU won three straight singles matches to take the match.
 
Viktorija Demcenkova tried to keep the match going for EKU at No. 3 singles.  She lost the first set 6-1 before storming back to win the second set, 6-1.  Maddie Silver put an end to the comeback bid by taking the third set 6-4 to secure the match for Marshall.
 
Two matches were left unfinished.  After losing the first set, Sagung Putri Dwinta won the second set 6-4 at No. 4 singles for Eastern Kentucky.  Marina Marti also lost the first set, 6-1, before evening the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-4 win in the second set.
 
"This match was very close," EKU Head Coach Rob Oertel said.  "We had the momentum in the matches that did not finish.  If Viktorija could have somehow pulled that third set out [at No. 3 singles], it would have been a different outcome.  She fought off three match-points in the last game, but couldn't get the fourth one.  If she could have pulled that out, we would have been in good shape to beat the 55th ranked team in the country.  We'll find out I hope in the next three weeks that playing such a strong schedule is going to pay off."
 
The Colonels will host Belmont on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Tom Higgins Tennis Courts.
