RICHMOND, Ky. –
The Eastern Kentucky University women's tennis team swept the University of the Cumberlands, 7-0, after falling to Xavier University, 6-1, to split the day Friday afternoon in the debut matches of the season at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.

Xavier (1-2) claimed the first doubles point early, taking No. 1 doubles by a score of 6-1. Laura Argente and Viktorija Demcenkova took down a Musketeer duo, 6-2, to push even. With all attention on No. 3 doubles to decide the point Kristina Lagoda and Raquel Montalvo battled, but were edged, 7-6, by Xavier.

The Musketeers went up 3-0 after taking No. 1 and 2 singles. Laura Argente squared off with Sophia Abelson at No. 3 singles, falling in set one 6-4. The Castellon, Spain native fought off Abelson in the second set to force a tiebreaker, falling 7-6.

"Xavier is a good team and probably were not a good first match for us," stated Head Coach Rob Oertel. "We just built it up too much and had a little too much stress. They're always a good program and a force in the Big East so it's not a bad loss. It's never an easy match with them, they always have good, competitive players. Tough first match, but we will play much better in the future for sure."

Margaux Lacroix claimed the lone point for the Colonels in a thrilling match at No. 6 singles. Lacroix took set one, 7-6, but fell in the second set, 3-6. The Liers, Belgium native converted three match points against Xavier's Lauren Fitz-Randolph to win the super tiebreaker, 14-12.

Eastern Kentucky (1-1) made quick work of the Patriots (0-1) in match two of the day.

The Colonels will be back in action Feb. 3 as they welcome in Arkansas State. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m.
