RICHMOND, Ky. – Margaux Lacroix came through in a crucial moment, taking the No. 6 singles match to clinch the win and Ohio Valley Conference Regular-Season Championship for the Eastern Kentucky University women's tennis team over Murray State University, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
The win shattered Murray State's perfect conference season.
Alexandra Belle and Lisa Friess paired up to take No. 2 doubles, 6-3, followed by a Laura Argente, Raquel Montalvo win at No. 3, 7-5, to take the point.
Kristina Lagoda made a statement, taking the first singles match at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1, to give EKU the 2-0 advantage. But, the Racers took the match at No. 1 to draw within one, 2-1.
Belle made quick work of her opponent at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2.
Murray again found an answer, winning three-set battles at No. 3 and 5 to tie the match.
With all eyes on the match at No. 6, Lacroix took the first set, 6-4, and the second, 6-3.
"I'm super proud of the girls," Head Coach Rob Oertel stated. "These are never easy. It's always a lot of emotion and a lot of stress to get through, but man they weathered the storm. I really believe in Margaux. No one takes down Margaux, her courage level is always at A+ and she's the one you want out there in that situation. With that said, we haven't even come close to obtaining our goal. We are on a mission to get the tournament title and that's what this whole season has been about. We have to win two matches, we are two matches away."
EKU improves to 14-8 (9-0 OVC) and completes league play undefeated while Murray State falls to 14-7 (8-1 OVC).
The squad will return to the court in the OVC Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee as the No. 1 seed on Saturday, April 21 at 5 p.m.
