Colonels Conclude Conference Play In Home Series Against Belmont

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky will host Belmont this weekend for the final conference series of the season.
 
The first game of the series is scheduled for Friday evening at 6 p.m.  Saturday will feature a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
-  Belmont leads the series 18-12. 
 
-  The most recent meeting between the two schools took place in the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.  EKU won the high-scoring affair 15-8. It was the Colonels' third victory in four meetings that season.
 
-  EKU shortstop Logan Thomason went 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs and was a triple short of the cycle in the 2019 postseason matchup.
 
-  In four games against Belmont in 2019, second baseman Daniel Harris IV hit .308 with two runs, five RBIs and a home run.
 
-  Left-handed pitcher Jake Lewis did not give up a run in two appearances against the Bruins in 2019.
 
THE COLONELS
-  EKU is 17-29 this season and 10-17 against conference opponents.  The Colonels have won six of their last eight games at Earle Combs Stadium. 
 
-  Harris got off to a slow start to the season, hitting .095 (4-for-42) in the first 11 games.  Since then, he is batting .368 with a .419 on-base percentage and has recorded at least one hit in 30 of his last 34 games.
 
-  Senior outfielder Caleb Upshaw is batting .410 with six runs, 13 RBIs, four extra-base hits and one steal in the past 10 games.
 
-  Freshman outfielder Kendal Ewell logged a .315 batting average with 11 runs, eight RBIs, five doubles and two home runs over his most recent 15 games.
 
-  Sophomore infielder Charlie Ludwick has been on a roll, posting a .345 batting average with nine runs, 10 RBIs and seven extra-base hits over his last 15 games.  Eastern has won five of the last six contest when Ludwick logs an extra-base hit.
 
-  The Eastern Kentucky pitching staff leads the Ohio Valley Conference with 409 strike outs.
 
-  Redshirt sophomore left-hander Will Brian notched his eighth save on Tuesday, the most in the conference.
 
-  Senior relief pitcher Jacob Abbott pitched two innings in relief on Tuesday. He leads the OVC with 27 appearances this season.
 
-  Senior right-hander Darren Williams will get the nod on Friday.  He has been commanding on the mound over his past six starts, recording 45 strike outs and logging a 2.85 ERA in 41 innings.  He has four quality starts during that time.  On the season, Williams is 2-7 with a 4.74 ERA and 75 strike outs in 68 and one-third innings.  Freshman right-hander Garret Simpson will take the mound for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Simpson is 1-5 with a 4.40 ERA and 28 strike outs in 43 innings this season.  Last weekend against Southeast Missouri, Simpson pitched five scoreless innings.  Over his last four starts, Simpson is 0-1 with a 2.93 ERA in 15 and one-third innings.  The freshman has not allowed more than two earned runs in any start this season.  Game three's starter has not been determined.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
-  Belmont is is 20-25 overall and 12-12 in conference play.  The Bruins couldn't hold a 4-3 seventh-inning lead in a non-conference battle against Austin Peay on Tuesday, falling 5-4.  Belmont has lost five straight.
 
-  Junior infielder Logan Jarvis leads the Bruins with a .362 batting average, 36 runs, 49 RBIs and seven home runs.  His .362 batting average is the fifth highest mark in the conference.  Jarvis leads the conference with five triples this season.  Belmont's slugger enters the series with a hit in nine of his past 10 games.
 
-  Sophomore outfielder John Behrends has tallied eight home runs and 13 double this season.  His .353 batting average is tied for sixth-best in the OVC.  Behrends also has 44 runs, 40 RBIs and 15 multi-hit games this year.
 
-  Sophomore right-hander Joshua South will start for the Bruins on Friday night.  On the season, South possesses a 4-5 record, 4.93 ERA and 52 strike outs in 65 and two-thirds innings.  The Sophomore has struck out 17 batters over his past four starts.  Freshman left-hander Andy Bean will start the second game of the series.  He is 5-2 with a 4.10 ERA and 52 strike outs in 63 and two-thirds innings this season.  Bean has won four of his last five decisions and has struck out four or more batters in seven of his last nine games.  Saturday afternoon's series finale starter has not been determined.
