Colonel Baseball Set For Home Opener Against Kentucky State

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky's baseball team plays its home opener against Kentucky State University on Wednesday.  The game will now begin at 3 p.m.

INSIDE THE SERIES
-  The Colonels are 20-9 all-time against Kentucky State.
 
-  The most recent meeting between the two teams came on March 13, 2019.  EKU won 9-3 in Richmond.
 
THE COLONELS
-  Eastern Kentucky began the season by losing three at Mercer, a team picked to place second in the Southern Conference.
 
-  Outfielder Kendal Ewell had a strong opening weekend.  The sophomore batted .500 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.  He also had two walks and a stolen base.
 
-  Relievers Niko Leontarakis, Quinton Hall, Chris Hamann and Will Brian combined to pitch five and two-thirds innings over the weekend without allowing a run, giving up three hits and striking out 12.
 
-  The Colonels did not commit an error in any of their first three games.
 
-  One day before the start of the 2022 season, Brian joined 65 others from across the nation on the watch list for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award.  He is one of only three players from the ASUN Conference on the watch list.
 
-  Outfielder Max Williams hit a game-tying 2-run home run in the series finale against Mercer.
 
-  Leontarakis will make his first start as a Colonel on Wednesday.  He pitched two innings of scoreless relief in the season-opener at Mercer, striking out six while allowing two hits and no walks.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
-  Kentucky State is 4-6 this season.  The Thorobreds lost two of three at Savannah State over the weekend.  KSU won the first game of the series 17-13.
 
-  Statistics are only available for seven of KSU's 10 games.  In those games, Collier Higgs leads the team with a .320 average and two doubles.
 
-  Adren Thompson had a team-best three home runs and eight RBIs.  Thompson hit a home run, finished 2-for-4 and drove in five runs in the victory at Savannah State.
 
-  Dom Lawson was 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBIs in the series opener at Savannah State.
 
-  Kentucky State's pitching staff had a 15.48 team ERA with 63 walks and 37 strikeouts.
 
-  KSU's first seven opponents combined for a .416 batting average.
