GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Senior
Joseana Vaz led five Colonels in double figures as the Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team rolled to an 87–66 win over North Dakota on Tuesday night at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
The victory marked EKU's first true road win of the season after opening with four of its first five games at home. It also gave the Colonels (4–1) their third straight win to open the early campaign.
EKU knocked down 15 three-pointers, the third most in a single game in program history and the most since December 2007.
Vaz finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Junior forward
Kailani Lindsey kept her hot streak alive with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including one three-pointer.
Lindsey has scored 33 points on 68 percent shooting (17-of-25) over the two-game series against UND.
Senior guard
Althea Kara Angeles added 13 points on three threes. Sophomore
Liz Freihofer scored 12 points, all from beyond the arc, and senior forward
Ella Bradley chipped in 11 points.
The Colonels dominated the first half, scoring 56 points while shooting 55.3 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from long range. They hit 10 three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes and held North Dakota (0–5) to 32.1 percent shooting, taking a 56–28 lead into halftime.
Six different Colonels connected from deep, and EKU assisted on 15 of its 21 first-half field goals.
EKU pushed its lead to as many as 32 points with 1:57 left in the third quarter before cooling off in the final period. North Dakota had two players in double figures, led by Mackenzie Hughes with 18 points and Walker Demers with 12.
The Colonels forced 17 turnovers and closed out the 87–66 road win in record-setting fashion from beyond the arc.
EKU returns home Saturday to face Midway University. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
