JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eastern Kentucky University's
Liz Freihofer has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, and teammate
Joseana Vaz has been selected the ASUN Newcomer of the Week following wins over North Dakota and Midway, the league office announced Monday.
EKU has now had three different players receive three different weekly conference honors this season.
Monday's award marks the 11th weekly conference honor of Freihofer's career and her second ASUN Player of the Week recognition. Vaz earned her first career ASUN Newcomer of the Week nod.
Freihofer turned in one of the top performances of her career in Saturday's win over Midway, scoring a career-high 27 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc, and a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line.
She also added six assists, six rebounds, two steals and one block. For the week, the Union, Kentucky, native averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals while hitting nine 3-pointers and shooting 48 percent from the field.
As of Monday, Freihofer ranks top eight in the NCAA and leads the ASUN Conference in made 3-pointers (22) and 3-pointers per game (3.67).
Vaz, a senior forward from Praia, Cape Verde, also delivered one of the strongest stretches of her career. She totaled 35 points and 19 rebounds across EKU's two wins, averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 boards while shooting 54 percent (14-of-26).
She is second on the team in scoring (11.5 ppg) and leads the Colonels in rebounding. Vaz had a 17-point, 12-rebound game against Midway, marking her first double double while touting the maroon and white.
EKU (5-1) travels to face longtime rival Morehead State on Wednesday afternoon in the 104th meeting between the programs.
