Women’s Basketball Renews Rivalry with Marshall on Sunday in Lexington

Game to Be Played at Transylvania’s Clive M. Beck Center

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team returns to action Sunday afternoon with a rivalry matchup against Marshall at the Clive M. Beck Center in downtown Lexington.

Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET, fans can purchase tickets online here. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Wes Chandler and Kent Miller on the call. Coverage on the Colonels All-Access page will begin at 2:30 p.m.

EKU (7-2) is coming off a narrow 87-83 road loss at Arizona of the Big 12 Conference in front of more than 7,750 fans on Wednesday. The defeat snapped a six-game winning streak for the Colonels that dated back to Nov. 12.

Senior guard Joseana Vaz turned in a standout performance against the Wildcats, recording her third double-double in the last four games with career highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds.

Senior guard Althea Kara Angeles also impressed, scoring 20 points while playing all 40 minutes. The Melbourne, Australia, native added five assists, four rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

Vaz and Angeles earned national recognition for their performances, both grading among the top 10 players in NCAA Division I women's basketball on Dec. 10. Vaz posted the third-best performance nationally with a 25.5 stat rating, while Angeles ranked eighth with a 21.9 rating, according to Skim Milkey on X.

Stat Rating is an adjusted version of Game Score that measures a player's productivity in a single game. Texas' Madison Booker, one of the best players in the country, led the nation on the day with a 32.3 rating after posting a triple-double of 28 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against UTRGV.

Also scoring in double figures for EKU were sophomore guard Liz Freihofer with 18 points, including three 3-pointers, and freshman guard Kenleigh Woods with 11 points while shooting 50 percent from the field.

Freihofer's performance marked her 27th career game in double figures and extended her streak to every game this season.

Sunday's contest renews a long-standing rivalry between EKU and Marshall, former conference foes separated by just 112 miles. The matchup also carries special significance for head coaches Greg Todd (EKU) and Juli Fulks (Marshall), the two most recent head coaches in Transylvania women's basketball history.

Todd and Fulks coached the Pioneers from 2006-24, combining for 399 wins, 10 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances and one NCAA national championship.

Scouting Marshall
Marshall (8-3) enters the weekend on a three-game winning streak under second-year head coach Fulks. The Thundering Herd have earned recent victories over Coppin State (Dec. 3), Kent State (Dec. 6) and Davis & Elkins, a 105-40 win on Thursday.

Senior guard Timaya Lewis-Eutsey leads Marshall, averaging 13.9 points per game. She has scored at least 16 points in each of her last three outings.

Series History
Sunday marks the 23rd meeting between EKU and Marshall since 1975. The Colonels hold an 18-4 advantage in the all-time series, including a 10-1 record in home games.

The teams will meet for the first time since 2014, with EKU having won six straight in the series dating back to 1996.
