Women’s Basketball Heads West for Wednesday Showdown at Arizona

EKU’s First Trip to Arizona Since the 2005 NCAA Tournament

TUCSON, Ariz. – With a large young crowd expected for Field Trip Day, the Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team heads west for a Wednesday afternoon match up against the University of Arizona at McKale Memorial Center.

Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on ESPN+ with Cindy Brunson and Joan Bonvicini on the call. The game will also air for free on the Colonels All-Access page and on X (@EKUWBB) with Wes Chandler on the audio broadcast.

EKU (7-1) enters the contest riding a six-game winning streak and continues to attract national attention. The Colonels recently received three votes in the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25 poll and hold a program-best No. 116 NET ranking in the NCAA's NET era.

The Colonels arrive in Tucson well-rested following their longest break of the season. In their most recent outing on Nov. 29, EKU posted a 74-64 win over Army West Point, a victory fueled by a balanced offensive effort.

Four Colonels scored in double figures against the Black Knights. Sophomore guard Liz Freihofer and senior forward Joseana Vaz each finished with 12 points, adding eight and four rebounds, respectively.

Senior guard Althea Kara Angeles tallied 11 points and eight assists, while freshman Kenleigh Woods contributed 10 points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting day, including two made threes. EKU shot 52 percent (27-of-52) from the field and dominated the paint, outscoring Army 42-14 inside.

Freihofer leads EKU with 15.4 points per game and has scored in double figures in all eight games this season. Vaz follows at 12.8 points per game and a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game, recording double-doubles in two of her last three outings.

As a team, the Colonels rank in the NCAA top 100 in more than 19 statistical categories, including:
  • No. 14 – made 3-pointers per game (9.6)
  • No. 21 – defensive rebounds per game (30.3)
  • No. 22 – field-goal percentage defense (34.1)
  • No. 29 – blocks per game (5.0)
  • No. 33 – assists per game (17.3)
  • No. 39 – assist-to-turnover ratio (1.20)
  • No. 41 – scoring offense (78.4)
  • No. 67 – rebounds per game (41.4)
  • No. 68 – scoring defense (57.4)
Scouting Arizona
Arizona enters Wednesday's match up at 6-2 under first-year head coach Becky Burke, a former University of Louisville standout who helped guide the Cardinals to three NCAA Tournaments. The Wildcats are looking to bounce back after two narrow losses last week, falling to Southern University (63-57) and New Mexico (72-69).

Offensively, Arizona averages 74.6 points per game and is led by graduate guard Mickayla Perdue, who scores a team-high 16.0 per game. The Springfield, Ohio, native has reached double figures in six games and owns two standout performances: 31 points against UC Irvine on Nov. 9 and 27 against Northern Arizona on Nov. 21.

Series History
Wednesday marks the first meeting between EKU and Arizona. It is the Colonels' second-ever trip to the state of Arizona; EKU last played there in the 2005 NCAA Tournament First Round, where the No. 12-seeded Colonels fell 87-65 to No. 5-seeded Arizona State after a 23-8 regular season.
