Game Notes

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky has played its last five games away from its home court. On Friday, the Lady Colonels (4-4) will play their second home game of the season when Davis & Elkins College visits McBrayer Arena.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will air live in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.

Eastern Kentucky had its four-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday at West Virginia. The winning streak was the longest for the program since winning 15 straight on its way to the NCAA tournament in 2005.

Davis & Elkins, a NCAA Division II school located in Elkins, W.Va., will bring a 3-2 record into McBrayer Arena on Friday. The two teams have met twice before. The Lady Colonels hold a 2-0 advantage, but the two squads have not faced each other since the 1985-86 season.

On Tuesday at West Virginia, EKU trailed by only eight at halftime, but couldn’t overcome a 12-2 Mountaineer run to open the second half and lost 60-40 in Morgantown. A pair of true freshmen led the Lady Colonels. Lexington native Brittany Coles finished with a career-best 14 points. Freshman Shakeyia Colyer also scored a career-high 10 points. Colyer had only scored two points through the first seven games of her collegiate career.

EKU committed only eight more turnovers than West Virginia (28-20), but was outscored off turnovers 31-10. WVU entered the game averaging 70.4 points per game, but didn’t score its 60th point against the Lady Colonels until 12 seconds remained in the game.

Eastern’s bench scored 32 of the team’s 40 points against West Virginia. Going into the game, the Lady Colonel bench had accounted for only 28 percent of the team’s points this season. Against the Mountaineers the bench scored 80 percent of the team’s points.

The Lady Colonels were out-rebounded for only the second time this season at WVU. For the game, WVU held a 38-29 rebounding advantage, but Eastern out-rebounded the Mountaineers 17-16 in the second half.

Davis & Elkins College is 1-2 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. D&E has wins over West Virginia Tech, Washington Adventist and Bluefield State. The Senators have scored 80-plus points three times in five games, including a 103 point performance against Washington Adventist.

Davis & Elkins welcomed back all five starters and a total of 11 letter winners from last year’s 5-22 team.

Freshman guard Shalisa Hill leads the team with an average of 16.8 points per game. She is also the team leader in rebounding (5.2 rpg) and assists (5.0 apg). Senior guards Lindsay Holliday and Teonna Jewell also average double figures. Holliday averages 12.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest. Jewell contributes 11.6 points and 4.2 boards.

As a team, D&E averages 44.6 rebounds per game.
