RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will host Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Turkey Hughes Field. The Colonels (14-8, 4-2 OVC) have won 11 of their last 14 games while the Redhawks (12-10, 3-3 MAC) have won four straight, including a series sweep of conference foe Eastern Michigan last weekend.
The two programs have a competitive history as evidenced by the all-time series being tied at 9-9. Last year served as a microcosm of the all-time series as EKU won the first matchup, 9-7, before Miami (Ohio) won the second, 14-6.
EKU is paced by its offense. The Colonels are currently 10th in the country with a .354 team batting average and their 9.4 runs per game are 18th in the country. Senior
Matt Davis is the motor behind that explosive offense. The speedy leadoff man is hitting .429 with four home runs, three triples and seven doubles to accompany a .509 on-base percentage. He has also scored an OVC-best 37 runs.
Sophomore third baseman
Jayson Langfels provides the power. Langfels is batting .404 with a team-best seven home runs and 31 RBI. He is also one of the OVC’s leaders with a .798 slugging percentage.
Junior
Anthony Ottrando has also been swinging a hot bat. The first baseman batted .550 last week with 10 runs driven in.
Sophomore
Matt Fyffe is expected to start on the hill for the Colonels today. The right-hander is 1-1 this season with a 5.06 ERA. He is coming off one of his most productive weeks of the season in which he earned a win against Morehead State and struck out nine batters in 6.1 innings of work.
Chris Nadeau paces the RedHawk offense with a stellar .448 batting average and 11 doubles. Zak Hatfield, meanwhile, leads Miami (Ohio) with eight home runs.
Right-hander Lance Kingrey is scheduled to start for the RedHawks today. It will be Kingrey’s first career start.
