RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will host Georgetown College at Turkey Hughes Field today at 3:00 p.m. The Colonels are 8-1 in non-conference home games this year.
The Colonels have not won since April 4, when they took both games of a doubleheader from UT Martin at Turkey Hughes Field. They went on the road last week, losing an epic 24-23 decision at Western Carolina on Wednesday before being swept at conference foe Tennessee Tech over the weekend.
Key injuries have contributed to the losing streak. Sophomore
Jayson Langfels, one of the national leaders in RBI per game, has not batted since the April 1 victory over Kentucky State due to a finger injury, although he did make his Colonel pitching debut in a brief appearance at WCU.
Meanwhile, senior
Matt Davis, one of the best hitters in the OVC and a national leader in runs per game, missed the final two games of the Tennessee Tech series with a hamstring injury.
Despite the injuries, EKU’s offense remains potent. The Colonels are second in the OVC in batting average (.361), on-base percentage (.446) and slugging percentage (.570) and Davis and Langfels are still among the league leaders in runs and RBI, respectively.
Freshman
Matt Harris (1-2) is scheduled to make his second start of the year on Tuesday.
EKU is 5-2 against Georgetown since 1984; however, the Tigers defeated the Colonels last year, 12-7, at Turkey Hughes Field.
Georgetown is led offensively by Eric Severson, who comes into Tuesday’s game with a .409 batting average. Bryan Bonner, meanwhile, leads the Tigers with five home runs.
