HUNTINGTON, W.V.
– Fresh off a stirring comeback victory over Georgetown College on Tuesday, the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will head up I-64 for a midweek showdown with Marshall on Wednesday afternoon.

The Colonels defeated Marshall, 10-7, earlier in the year at Turkey Hughes Field.

Trailing 7-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth yesterday, the Colonels (19-13, 6-6 OVC) scored seven runs, six of which came with two outs, to defeat Georgetown College, 9-8. Senior Matt Davis laced a pinch-hit double down the left field in that inning to score the go-ahead run. The win snapped a five-game losing skid for the Colonels.

Key injuries have plagued the Colonels recently. Sophomore Jayson Langfels, one of the national leaders in RBI per game, has not batted since the April 1 victory over Kentucky State due to a finger injury, although he did pick up the win in the game against Georgetown, pitching 1.1 innings and allowing one run on one hit.

Meanwhile, Davis, one of the best hitters in the OVC and a national leader in runs per game, missed the final two games of the Tennessee Tech series last weekend with a hamstring injury and is questionable for today’s game.

Despite the injuries, EKU’s offense remains potent. The Colonels are second in the OVC in batting average (.361), on-base percentage (.444) and slugging percentage (.567) and Davis and Langfels are still among the league leaders in runs and RBI, respectively.

Sophomore right-hander Matt Fyffe (3-2) is scheduled to start on the hill for the Colonels.

Marshall is 14-20 this year and 5-7 in Conference USA. The Thundering Herd is paced offensively by Victor Gomez, who comes into the game batting .303 with 10 home runs.

Sophomore righty Shane Farrell (0-6) is expected to start for Marshall.

EKU is 18-19 against Marshall since 1984.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
