RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will try to improve its non-conference home record to 10-1 this afternoon when it hosts Xavier at Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
The Colonels (19-16, 6-8 OVC) dropped a doubleheader to conference foe Murray State this weekend before Sunday’s third game was rained out. They currently sit at sixth place in the conference, just one game behind the fifth-place team, Morehead State.
Hitting stars
Matt Davis and
Jayson Langfels have fully returned from injuries, as evidenced by the duo going a perfect 8-for-8 with four RBI and two runs scored in game one against Murray State on Saturday. Senior captain
Tyler Rehmel and reliable weekend starter
Chris Hord have been saddled with injuries, however, and their statuses over the next week are up in the air.
Davis and Langfels both enter the week batting an incredible .459. Davis is the national leader with 1.83 runs per game while Langfels is tops in the country with 1.79 RBI per game.
Sophomore
Matt Fyffe (3-3) will start on the mound for the Colonels. Fyffe comes into Tuesday’s matchup with a 6.82 ERA; however, he leads the Colonels by large margin with 35 strikeouts in only 33 innings of work.
Xavier (20-14, 8-7 A-10) comes in having won four of its last five games, including take two of three from conference foe Fordham last weekend. The Musketeers are led by Ben Thomas, who carries a .357 batting average and seven home runs into today’s game. Zac Richard (.346) and Adam Pasono (.336) are also major contributors for Xavier.
EKU is 20-16 against Xavier since 1984. The last time the schools met was 2005.
