RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky will try to snap a three-game losing skid on Wednesday when Southern Illinois Edwardsville visits McBrayer Arena. SIU Edwardsville is transitioning from Division II to Division I and has joined the Ohio Valley Conference. The Cougars will begin playing a full conference schedule in 2001-12.
Tip-off between the Lady Colonels (8-9) and the Cougars (4-16) is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will air live in the Richmond area on WEKY 1340 AM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.
In its last game, Eastern Kentucky shot 25.9 percent and only scored 16 points in the second half in a 43-41 loss to Southeast Missouri State on Saturday at McBrayer Arena. The Lady Colonels had two shots in the final six seconds to tie the game but couldn’t convert on either one. Freshman
Shakeyia Colyer led EKU with 10 points.
Eastern Kentucky committed 23 turnovers. After shooting 41.7 percent in the first half, EKU made just 7-of-27 attempts (25.9 percent) in the second half. The 41 points against SEMO was the fewest ever scored in an OVC game by a Lady Colonel team.
SIU Edwardsville leads the all-time series 1-0. The two teams met for the first time last season. The Cougars edged Eastern 54-44 in Edwardsville.
EKU enters the game ranked second in the OVC, and 88th in the nation, in scoring defense (59.7 ppg). The Lady Colonels are also second in the OVC, and 49th in the nation, in three-point field goal defense (28.6 percent).
The Cougars opened the season by knocking off preseason OVC favorite Morehead State and have three dangerous scoring threats. As a team, SIUE averages just 56.5 points per game, but three Cougars average double figures and have scored over 200 points this season.
After knocking off Morehead State 67-64 to begin the season, SIU Edwardsville lost six straight before beating Missouri-Kansas City. The Cougars then endured a nine-game skid before beating Division II Northern Kentucky last week. SIUE fell to Ball State on Friday then picked up win No. 4 against South Dakota, which like SIUE is transitioning to Division I, on Monday.
Sophomore Melia Duncan registered 20 points and nine rebounds in the 62-51victory over South Dakota. Senior Ashley Bey added 16 points and four assists. Raven Berry, a 6-foot-1 freshman forward, finished with 14 points and eight boards.
Berry leads the team in scoring (13.2 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg). She has made 50 percent of her shots from the field. Duncan averages 11.5 points per game. Bey contributes 10.8 points, four assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.
SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Kentucky share one common opponent. EKU lost to Central Arkansas 52-47 and the Cougars lost to UCA 64-59.
