MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky enters the final week of the 2009-10 regular season tied for fourth place in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Lady Colonels will play at Morehead State on Saturday before concluding their regular season schedule with home games against Tennessee-Martin and Murray State.

Saturday’s game at Morehead State will air live in the Richmond area on 106.7 FM The Dog, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.

Despite being picked to finish ninth in the OVC preseason poll, EKU (11-14, 7-8 OVC) is tied with Murray State for fourth place in the conference standings. Three more teams, Tennessee-Martin, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech, are within in a single game of fourth place. The top four teams will host first round OVC tournament games.

After facing the first place team in the OVC last Saturday, EKU will take on the second place squad this Saturday. Morehead State’s only conference losses were to Eastern Illinois twice and a shocker at Jacksonville State. The Eagles (19-8, 12-3 OVC) won five straight in between losses to Eastern Illinois and rebounded with a win over Southeast Missouri on Saturday.

Morehead State leads the nation in three-point field goals per game (10.5). Three Eagles average in double figures, led by Chynna Bozeman’s 18.6 points per game average. She also averages five rebounds per contest. Tiffany Hamilton averages 11.3 points per game. Courtney Lumpkin contributes 10.3 points and 4.7 assists per game. Ashar Harris is the top rebounder (9.4 rpg) in the OVC.

On Saturday at Southeast Missouri, Morehead State made 14-of-46 from three-point range, but went just 6-for-24 (25 percent) from inside the arc. Bozeman had 18 points on five three-pointers and nine rebounds. Tiffanie Stephens scored 16 and Ashley Martin grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds.

In the first meeting this season between the two teams, a lay-up by Alex Jones with 51 seconds left gave Eastern Kentucky a 58-57 lead and capped a 16-3 late-game run, but Hamilton’s jumper with 17 seconds to play gave Morehead State a 59-58 win on Jan. 23 at McBrayer Arena.

The Lady Colonels fell behind by 17 with 14:31 remaining in the second half and trailed by 12, 54-42, when they began their late game run with 7:39 to go. Following the basket by Jones that put EKU up by one, the Eagles missed a three-point attempt. Eastern went to the free throw line with 25 seconds on the clock and a chance to extend the lead to three, but failed to convert on both attempts. After what proved to be the game-winner by Hamilton, Eastern Kentucky got off two attempts for its own game-winner in the final three seconds, but couldn’t get either one to drop through.

Bozeman scored a game-high 21 points on five three-pointers and six free throws for MSU. Jones led the Lady Colonels with 15 points and also had seven rebounds. Morehead State shot 22.6 percent (7-for-31) from three-point range. Eastern Kentucky held a 42-31 rebounding advantage, but the Eagles grabbed 14 boards off the offensive glass for 13 second-chance points. EKU committed 22 turnovers compared to 14 for MSU. Freshman Shakeyia Colyer contributed 14 points and five boards to the Lady Colonel cause.

This is the 78th meeting between Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. EKU leads the all-time series 39-38. The Eagles have won seven straight in the series, and are 21-13 in games played in Morehead. The two teams have played every season since 1971-72.
