RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team fell in both games of Saturday’s doubleheader with Bowling Green State, losing game one 19-10 and game two 7-6 at Turkey Hughes Field. With the losses, the Colonels fall to 7-10 on the season while the Falcons improve to 5-7-1.

Freshman right-hander Anthony Bazzani started on the mound for the Colonels in game one and pitched six innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits. He left the game in the sixth with an 8-7 lead; however, sophomore right-hander Matt Harris (0-3) received the loss as he surrendered three runs in the seventh and six in the eighth, only four of which were earned because the Colonel defense committed three of their six errors in the inning.

Patrick O’Brien (1-1) picked up the win for the Falcons as he retired one batter in the seventh to become the pitcher of record.

Junior Ryan Faidley batted 3-for-5 in the game with two RBI and two runs scored. Faidley, junior Jayson Langfels and sophomores Richie Rodriguez and Michael Garcia all hit home runs for the Colonels. Garcia led the Colonels with three RBI.

There was a total of eight home runs in the game.

T.J. Blanton had a huge game for BGSU as he hit three home runs, one of which was an inside-the-park job, and drove in seven runs. Matthew Pitzulo also had four hits in the game.

EKU took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when a pair of two-run home runs by Rodriguez and Garcia made the score 8-7.

After BGSU rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, Faidley tied in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run bomb over the left field wall that made it 10-10.

The Falcons then scored nine runs on only four hits (and three errors) in the top of the eighth to blow the game open.

Junior left-hander Paul Duncan made his second start of the season in game two and pitched admirably, going four innings of the seven inning game and allowing three runs on five hits. Sophomore lefty Greg Terry (1-1) came on in the fifth and got the loss, going 1.2 innings and surrendering three runs on four hits.

Kevin Leady (2-1) received the win, pitching 5.2 innings and giving up six runs on eight hits.

Garcia and Langfels collected two hits apiece in the game while sophomore Jacob Daniel drove in a team-best two runs.

Ryan Schlater paced the Falcons offensively, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and runs scored.

The Colonels jumped out to an early 4-2 lead thanks to an RBI single by junior Bryce Labhart and a two-run base hit by Daniel. They made it a 5-3 lead in the third when Garcia laced a single through the left side that plated Faidley.

BGSU, however, scored four runs in the top of the sixth, two of which came off Blanton’s fourth home run of the day, to take a 7-5 lead.

Langfels delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough as the Falcons held on to win.

The Colonels continue their homestand this week when they take on Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday, March 23, at 3:00 p.m. at Turkey Hughes Field.
