OXFORD, Ohio
– The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team stranded 15 runners and fell to Miami University, 11-3, on Wednesday night at McKie Field at Hayden Park in the second game of this week’s home-and-home series with the RedHawks.

The loss drops the Colonels to 8-11 on the season while Miami improves to 9-10.

Freshman right-hander Austin Rexroat (1-1) picked up the loss for EKU, going 2.1 innings and surrendering four runs on six hits.

The RedHawks used eight pitchers throughout the evening, but the win went to Reece Asbury (1-2), who pitched a scoreless third and fourth while only allowing three hits.

Junior Jayson Langfels led EKU with three hits, including his third triple of the year in the top of the eighth, and scored a run. Senior Joey Stevens also collected three hits while sophomore Richie Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

The Colonels left the bases loaded in the first, fifth and sixth innings.

Jordan Jankowski scored a team-high four runs for Miami while Kyle Weldon and Jon Edgington led the RedHawks with three RBI apiece.

EKU drew first blood with a two-run first as sophomore Jacob Daniel walked with one out and went to second on a base hit by Langfels. Senior Anthony Ottrando was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and junior Ryan Faidley drew four balls to walk home a run. The next batter, junior Richie Allen, legged out an infield hit to score Langfels and make the score 2-0.

Weldon tied it in the bottom of the second with a two-run shot to right center, and then the RedHawks took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Weldon laced a base hit through the left side and Edgington lifted a sacrifice fly to center that made it 4-2. Miami rallied for three runs two innings later to add to its lead.

The Colonels got a run back in the seventh when Rodriguez ripped a two-out base hit into right center that plated fellow sophomore Michael Garcia; however, the RedHawks negated that effort in the bottom half of the inning as Jankowski blasted a two-run home run to left, Edgington scored on an error and Ryan Curl came home on a double by Adam Eaton to make the score 11-3.

The Colonels return to action this weekend when they open OVC play by hosting preseason conference favorites Eastern Illinois in a three-game series at Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
