CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Southeast Missouri State on Friday afternoon at Capaha Field, losing game one, 17-9, and then falling in game two, 7-4.
With the pair of losses, EKU falls to 12-13 (3-2 OVC) while SEMO captures a share of first place in the OVC by improving to 17-9 (4-1 OVC).
The Colonels will attempt to avoid the series sweep as they take on the Redhawks in game three tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. EST.
EKU took an early lead in game one thanks to a two-run home run by sophomore
Richie Rodriguez in the top of the third that scored freshman
Matt Phipps and made it 2-0.
SEMO tied it in the fourth, however, as Casey Jones laced an RBI single and Blake Slatterly ripped an RBI double to right field to make the score 2-2.
The Redhawks then exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-2 and effectively put the game out of reach.
The Colonels rallied for five runs in the seventh as Rodriguez singled in sophomore

Austin Grisham doubled in Rodriguez and senior
Joey Stevens and then junior
Jayson Langfels crushed a two run home run that plated Grisham and made the score 14-8.
SEMO added two more in the bottom half of that inning and another in the eighth, however, to keep the Colonels at bay.
Junior right-hander
Stephen Hefler (1-2) received the loss in game one as he went 4.2 innings and allowed 10 runs on 10 hits.
Kyle Gumieny (5-0) maintained his perfect record as he picked up the win by working 6.2 innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits.
Rodriguez paced EKU by going 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Langfels, meanwhile, batted 3-for-5 with three RBI and run scored.
Jones, Slatterly, Kenton Parmley and Louie Haseltine all drove in three runs for the Redhawks.

Slatterly’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh won it for the Redhawks in game two. The Colonels led 4-3 heading into the final inning; however, Parmley singled to lead off the inning and then went to third on a base hit by Jim Klocke. After Jones was intentionally walked, Slatterly ended the game with a walk-off grand slam.
Sophomore right-hander
Matt Harris (2-4) received the loss for EKU, pitching just 0.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits.
Junior lefty
Paul Duncan started on the hill for the Colonels and went 5.2 innings, allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits.
Shae Simmons (2-0) got the win for SEMO as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Redhawks.

Anthony Ottrando and junior
Ryan Faidley all drove in a run each for EKU.
Parmley, Klocke and Haseltine all collected two hits for SEMO in game two.
EKU took the lead first in game two as Ottrando led off the top of the second with a solo home run that made it 1-0. SEMO tied it in the bottom of the inning as Haseltine matched Ottrando with a solo home run of his own.
The Redhawks then took the lead off an RBI single by Klocke; however, the Colonels tied it in the fifth with a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez and then took the lead in the sixth as Langfels and Faidley both hit solo home runs.
SEMO got one back in the bottom of the sixth and then won it in the seventh.
