CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will play conference foe Southeast Missouri State this weekend in a three-game series at Capaha Field. The Colonels (12-11, 3-0 OVC) have won five of their last six and currently sit alone atop the OVC standings.
A doubleheader is scheduled for Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m. The third game of the series will be played on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The series pits the first and second place teams in the conference against one another as the Redhawks (15-9, 2-1 OVC) took two of three at Morehead State last weekend.
EKU swept preseason OVC favorite Eastern Illinois over the weekend at Turkey Hughes Field.
In terms of conference games only, the series also pits the top pitching team in the league against the top hitting team. The Colonel pitching staff boasts a 2.89 ERA in OVC games while the Redhawk lineup is hitting an imposing .438 in league action.
EKU’s weekend rotation is junior right-hander
Stephen Hefler (1-1, 4.66 ERA), junior lefty
Paul Duncan (2-1, 5.84 ERA) and freshman right-hander
Anthony Bazzani (1-2, 8.31 ERA).
SEMO will throw senior right-hander Kyle Gumieny (4-0, 4.12 ERA), junior left-hander Logan Mahon (2-1, 6.28) and junior left-hander Jordan Underwood (2-3, 5.08 ERA).
Both teams are led offensively by preseason All-Americans. Junior third baseman
Jayson Langfels paces EKU with a .411 batting average, 26 runs scored, 10 doubles and seven home runs. Senior catcher Jim Klocke, meanwhile, has a team-best 30 RBI for the Redhawks.
EKU leads the all-time series between the two schools, 28-24.
The Colonels took two of three from the Redhawks last year at Turkey Hughes Field in a wild series that saw EKU come back from a 10-0 deficit in game one.
