RICHMOND, Ky. – Fresh off a series sweep over UNC Asheville, the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will square off against West Virginia in a doubleheader on Wednesday at Hawley Field. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
The Colonel bats came alive last weekend as EKU (6-8) scored 33 runs and pounded out 39 hits over its three-game sweep of UNC Asheville at Turkey Hughes Field. While the Colonels are 6-2 and hitting .330 as a team at home, they will try to prove this week that they can hit and win on the road, where they are 0-6 and hitting just .222 as a team.
Junior
Richie Rodriguez continues to lead the Colonels at the plate, hitting .444, third best in the OVC, with 10 runs scored, nine RBI and six stolen bases. Junior
Jacob Daniel had a big weekend, hitting .500 (9-of-18) over the three-game series to raise his season batting average to .347. Daniel also leads EKU with three home runs and 17 RBI, second and third best in the OVC, respectively.
The EKU pitching staff also contributed to the Colonels’ big weekend, stifling UNC Asheville to a .267 team batting average and striking out 31 Bulldogs in 25 innings of work.
Senior left-hander
Paul Duncan (0-1, 9.00 ERA) is scheduled to start in game one of the doubleheader while sophomore right-hander
Anthony Bazzani (0-3, 14.29 ERA) is slated to go in game two.
WVU (8-7) is 5-1 at home this season and has won five of its last six games. The Mountaineers are led by the duo of Jeremy Gum, who is batting .366, and Dan Dibartolomeo, who is batting .364. Grant Buckner leads WVU with 14 RBI.
Marshall Thompson (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will throw in game one for the Mountaineers, while their pitcher for game two has yet to be determined.
EKU is 3-4 all-time against West Virginia. The Colonels fell to the Mountaineers in a slugfest, 13-11, last year in Charleston, W.Va. Rodriguez batted 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored in that game while Daniel went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Following this week’s doubleheader, the Colonels will head to Terre Haute, Ind. this weekend for a three-game series with Indiana State.
