RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will play a home-and-home series with Miami University this week, hosting the RedHawks on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Turkey Hughes Field, before traveling to Oxford on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. game on McKie Field at Hayden Park.
EKU (6-13) enters the week on a five-game losing streak, having been swept in a doubleheader at West Virginia last week and in a three-game series with Indiana State over the weekend. The Colonels, however, are 6-2 and hitting .330 as a team at home this year.
Miami (6-11) took two of three games at Morehead State over the weekend.
Junior right-hander
Matt Harris (0-0, 2.79 ERA) will make his first start of the season for the Colonels on Tuesday, while sophomore right-hander
Anthony Bazzani (0-4, 15.34 ERA) will try to get back on track with a Wednesday night start.
Miami will trot out a duo of southpaws as left-hander Shawn Marquardt (0-3, 10.12 ERA) is scheduled to start on Tuesday and left-hander Alex Brown (2-1, 0.00 ERA) is slated to go on Wednesday.
EKU is led offensively by junior
Richie Rodriguez, who enters this week third in the OVC with a .442 batting average after going 7-for-10 with two runs scored and two stolen bases in the final two games at Indiana State. Junior
Jacob Daniel is batting .353 and continues to be the Colonels’ best run-producer, as he leads the team with four home runs and 19 RBI. Sophomore
Matt Phipps, meanwhile, has come on strong recently, hitting .333 with three RBI last week to raise his season batting average to .321.
Kyle Weldon and Bryce Redeker lead the Miami offensive attack. Weldon is batting .373 on the year with four home runs and 16 RBI, while Redeker is hitting .338 with two home runs and 16 RBI.
The series between EKU and Miami has been a competitive one, as the all-time record is tied at 11-11. The teams have split the last two home-and home series with the home team winning every time.
Junior lefty
Greg Terry earned the win in last year’s home win versus Miami, while Daniel picked up two hits and junior
Michael Garcia drove in two runs in the game.
Following this week’s home-and-home, the Colonels will open conference play when they travel to face OVC foe Eastern Illinois over for a three-game series over the weekend.
