GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will play a two-game midweek series at UNC Greensboro on Tuesday and Wednesday, before heading back to Spartanburg, S.C. to face Wofford in a three-game set this weekend.
Both games this week are scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
EKU (3-7) was in Spartanburg two weekends ago to play USC Upstate in a three-game series.
Entering this week, EKU is one of the top power-hitting teams in the Ohio Valley Conference, as the Colonels lead the league in home runs (18) and slugging percentage (.489), both by large margins. In EKU’s three-game series with Indiana State at Turkey Hughes Field last weekend, 19 of the Colonels 34 hits were of the extra-base variety and 10 of them were home runs.
Senior
Richie Rodriguez is the catalyst of that offense. Rodriguez, who was named the OVC Player of the Week on Monday, is batting .400 and leads the conference in home runs (6), RBI (15) and runs scored (12). In Sunday’s game three against Indiana State, he became the first Colonel since 2006 to hit three home runs in one game, and he missed a school-record fourth home run by inches in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run double off the wall in left field.
Senior #A.J. Jamison# (.333 batting average) and junior
Austin Grisham (.333 batting average) are also swinging the bat well in the early going.
UNCG (8-2) won its first seven games of the season before dropping two of three to Radford at home over the weekend.
The Spartans enter the week hitting .319 as a team. Kris Richards leads UNCG with a .448 batting average, while Trevor Edwards has driven in a team-high 14 runs.
EKU will start sophomore right-hander
Blake Bottoms (0-0) on Tuesday, while freshman right-hander
Cody Creamer (0-0) will make his first career start on Wednesday.
Senior right-hander
Matt Fyffe (2-0), the Colonels’ best reliever, is currently tied for the OVC lead in wins (2), third in ERA (1.46) and sixth in opponent batting average (.205).
UNCG will counter with right-hander Tyler Frazier (0-0) on Tuesday. The Spartan’s Wednesday pitcher is undetermined.
EKU is 1-4 all-time against UNCG, although the Colonels won the last meeting between the two teams, 9-6, in 2010. Rodriguez drove in a pair of runs in that game while fellow senior
Jacob Daniel recorded a pinch hit RBI triple.
