Colonel Rally Comes Up Short In Series Finale Against Tech

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky’s rally came up one run short in a 5-4 loss in the series finale against Tennessee Tech.

The Golden Eagles (8-6, 2-1 OVC) won the series two games to one.

The Colonels (4-7, 1-2 OVC) fell behind 4-1 after three and a half innings.  Tech scored twice in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Zach Zarzour and an RBI single by Zach Stephens. 

Run scoring singles by Sean Hagen and Alex Hughes in the bottom of the inning closed the gap to 4-3.  The score remained the same until the ninth inning.

Brent Cobb (1-3) started for Eastern and allowed three earned runs over six innings.  He walked two and struck out five.  The junior retired the last seven batters he faced.

The Golden Eagles threatened in the seventh.  With one out and two on, Cody Creamer got an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.  Tennessee Tech extended its lead to two in the ninth on an RBI double by Brandon Thomasson.

With two on and two out in the bottom of the ninth, Austin Grisham singled through the right side to close the gap to one.  However, Demetrius Moorer popped up on a bunt attempt to end the game.

Kenny Hostrander was the only Colonel to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with one RBI.  Stephens went 3-for-3 for Tech with an RBI.  Daniel Miles was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Seth Lucio (2-0) earned the win for the Golden Eagles after pitching five and a third innings of relief.  He allowed one run on two hits, walked three and struck out five.

The Colonels will take to the road this week for a pair of games.  Eastern will play at Furman on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and at Western Carolina on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
