CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – With two runs in the top of the ninth, Eastern Kentucky tied the game but couldn’t hold off Southeast Missouri in an 8-6 loss on Friday.
The Colonels (4-10, 1-3 OVC) entered the ninth inning trailing 6-4.
Doug Teegarden led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out. A fielding error in right field allowed Teegarden to score and
Demetrius Moorer to reach third base.
Austin Grisham’s fly ball to right was enough to score Moorer and tie the game.
With one out in the bottom of the inning, Dalton Hewitt singled for the Redhawks (10-9, 2-2 OVC). Branden Boggetto ended the game with a two-run home run over the left field fence.
Seven different Colonels had one hit each and six different players scored one run each.
Shaun Ball finished 1-for-4 with his second home run of the season and two RBIs.
Matt Phipps also went 1-for-4 with his third dinger of the season.
Matt Tellor went 3-for-5 with a run and three RBIs for Southeast. Boggetto was 2-for-5 with a run and two driven in. Bobby Hurst (2-0) earned the win after allowing two unearned runs in one inning of work. He walked one and struck out two.
Myles Scott (0-1) suffered the loss. The junior came on with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth. He struck out the first two batters he faced to get out of the inning and limit the damage to just one run before running into trouble in the ninth.
The Colonels and Redhawks will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. ET. The two teams were scheduled to play single games on Saturday and Sunday, but inclement weather is in the forecast for Sunday.
