RICHMOND, Ky. – After scoring 37 runs in the first two games of the series, Eastern Kentucky scored just one run in a 5-1 loss to Tennessee-Martin in the series finale on Sunday.
UT Martin took its first lead in the series in the top of the second inning and never trailed. Nico Zych hit a one-out double down the right field line and then stole third. He scored on a ground ball by Hagen Nelson.
The Skyhawks added to their lead in the fifth. Nelson scored on a pass ball before Grant Glasser’s RBI single made it 3-0. UTM pushed out in front 5-0 in the eighth. Luis Paublini drove in a run on a bases loaded bunt and Sonny Mastromatteo scored on a wild pitch.
Eastern (11-21, 7-8 OVC) finally got on the board in the ninth.
Luke Wurzelbacher hit his third home run of the season, and second in as many days. The pinch hit, solo shot made it over the left field fence.
Dalton Potts (4-4) started for UTM and held EKU scoreless for six innings. He gave up four hits, walked four and struck out two. Eastern Kentucky starter
Shane Grimm (3-4) allowed five runs, only three of which were earned, on seven hits in seven and one-third innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.
Glasser went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for Tennessee-Martin.
Austin Grisham and
Shaun Ball each had two hits for Eastern.
The Colonels will play two mid-week games against Miami (Ohio) this week. The RedHawks visit Turkey Hughes Field for a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday. EKU travels to Oxford for a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday.
