RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky overcame a four-run deficit in the eighth inning but fell to Austin Peay 9-6 in 10 innings in the series finale on Saturday.
The Colonels (15-26, 11-10 OVC) trailed 6-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. With two on and one out,
Bryan Soloman singled to left to drive in one run. After the next batter walked,
Austin Grisham made it a one run game with a 2-run single to left field. APSU went to its closer Tyler Rogers, but
Doug Teegarden found a hole up the middle to plate
Luke Wurzelbacher with the tying run.
Craig Massoni led off the top of the 10th inning with a single for Austin Peay (32-13, 13-7 OVC). A throwing error on a bunt single by Cody Hudson allowed Massoni to score what proved to be the game-winning run from first. The Governors added a pair of sacrifice flies to cap the 3-run inning.
Rogers (6-2) earned the win after allowing one hit and no runs over two and two-thirds innings. He walked one and struck out two.
Myles Scott (2-2) pitched the final four innings but suffered the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits. Scott entered the game having made nine straight appearances without allowing an earned run. Before running into trouble in the 10th, he had run his streak to 20 and one-third straight innings without giving up an earned run.
Soloman finished 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.
Kyle Nowlin and
Alex Hughes each recorded two hits for Eastern Kentucky.
Eastern got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Soloman. However, Austin Peay answered in the top of the third with three runs. Dylan Riner hit a sacrifice fly to get the Governors on the board. Rolando Gautier drove in a run with a triple to left center. Kevin Corey’s RBI single to right made it 3-1.
The Colonels cut the deficit to one in the fifth when
Shaun Ball drew a bases loaded walk. Again, APSU answered in its very next trip to the plate. With two outs, Jordan Hankins scored on a wild pitch. With runners at second and third, P.J. Torres followed with a 2-run single to center field to make it 6-2.
Reed Harper, Gautier, Massoni, Hudson and P.J. Torres all record two hits for APSU. Torres finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Riner also drove in two runners.
Shane Grimm started for EKU and allowed six earned runs on eight hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out two. Austin Peay starter Zach Hall gave up two runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits over seven innings. He walked four and struck out four.
The Colonels will play at Marshall on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
