PDF StatsRICHMOND, Ky. – Morehead State scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn a 6-4 win over the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team Saturday night at Turkey Hughes Field.
With the win, the Eagles (15-15, 7-7 OVC) earned their first series victory over EKU (13-17, 4-7) since 2010.
After the Colonels quickly got one out in the top of the ninth, three straight Morehead State batters reached base. Brandon Rawe began the rally with a single before Chris Robinson walked to put runners on first and second.
Bobby Burns followed with a high chopper to the left side of the infield. Eastern third baseman
Cole Warrenfeltz was unable to field the ball cleanly allowing Rawe to hustle home for the go-ahead score and Robinson to move to third. Nick Newell added an insurance run for Morehead State with a perfectly executed squeeze play.
The Colonels never led in the game, trailing by scores of 3-0 and 4-3. Eastern Kentucky got on the board in the fifth thanks to a two-run single from sophomore
Kenny Hostrander. EKU evened the score at 3-3 behind sophomore
TJ Alas' sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Burns put Morehead State back on top in the seventh with a two-out RBI single to right field. Hostrander, who finished the night 4-of-4 at the plate, came through again in the bottom of the eighth with a game-tying single.
Both starting pitchers posted quality numbers. EKU senior righty
Brent Cobb lasted 6.1 innings allowing seven hits and just one earned run. The Eagles' Matt Anderson went six innings and also gave up just one earned run.
The game was marred by seven errors – four by the home team and three by the visitors.
Rawe led the Morehead State offense with three hits and two runs scored. For the Colonels, freshman
Taylor Blair and Alas each tallied two hits to go along with Hostrander's four base knocks.
The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow, April 6 with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
