RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team looks to bounce back as it returns to the bluegrass state to take on the No. 6 University of Louisville Cardinals on Wednesday at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
Â
The Colonels (0-4) opened their season in Tucson with a four-game series against the No. 7 University of Arizona. The Wildcats, fresh off a runner-up finish in the 2016 College World Series, proved to be quite the challenge for EKU. Eastern held the lead in two of the four games, even taking a lead into the ninth inning of the fourth game, but the Colonels could not hold off the Arizona comeback, losing 9-8.
Â
The Cardinals (3-0) spent opening weekend down in Florida notching wins against Alabama State, Ball State and No. 22 Maryland. Louisville returns three All-Americans from the 2016 squad that won 50 games in route to a NCAA Super Regional appearance.
Â
Max Ford will take the mound for Eastern. The junior is 0-0 through two and one-third innings of work on the season. Louisville has sophomore Bryan Hoeing on the bump. Hoeing is also 0-0 this season with three full innings under his belt.
Â
EKU is led offensively by a trio of Colonels. Junior
Cornell Nixon has a team high six hits and four RBIs, as well as two stolen bases. Senior
Ben Fisher is right behind Nixon with five hits and four RBIs.
Shea Sullivan has four hits of his own. The senior from Gibsonia, Pa. also has a team high five RBIs.Â
