RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team is set to host the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies for a three-game series this weekend at Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington. Â
Â
The games, originally scheduled to take place in Richmond, were moved to Lexington due to the construction on the new Earle Combs Stadium. First pitch for the series opener is set for 2 p.m. on Friday. The Saturday matchup also starts at 2 p.m., while the Sunday tilt will get underway at 1 p.m.
Â
The Colonels (0-5) started the season off by facing two teams ranked in the top seven nationally in No. 7 Arizona and No. 6 Louisville. EKU led for most of the Feb. 18 game against Arizona, before losing the lead in the bottom of the seventh and falling 16-13. The Colonels faced a similar fate two days later when they took an 8-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth against the Wildcats, only to see Arizona score three runs to complete a comeback, winning by a score of 9-8.
Â
The Golden Grizzlies (1-4) took one out of three at Lipscomb on opening weekend, then dropped two mid-week games to East Tennessee State before heading up to the bluegrass state to face the Colonels.
Â
Eastern is led by junior
Cornell Nixon's team and Ohio Valley Conference best six runs and three stolen bases, as well as leading the team in hits with seven. Senior
Shea Sullivan leads the team in RBIs with five from four hits. Fellow senior
Ben Fisher has notched six hits and four RBIs, tied for second on the team with Nixon.
Â
EKU will start junior lefty
Jack Piekos on Friday night. Piekos went five innings at Arizona on Feb. 17, striking out two batters while only giving up two earned runs. Sophomore
Aaron Ochsenbein takes the mound on Saturday, while junior
Casey Collins gets the ball on Sunday.
