SUBOTICA, Serbia – EKU women's basketball alum
Danielle Rainey inks a professional contract with ŽKK Spartak Subotica of the First League of Serbia, announced by the club on Thursday morning.
"I'm beyond excited to head to Serbia for my rookie season," said Rainey. "This journey has been full of obstacles and tribulations but through it all, I kept my faith and am now entering year one of my professional career."
Danielle becomes the fifth Colonel since the 2011 season to sign a contract overseas, joining Jalen O'Bannon (2017), Alexus Cooper (2017), Shameekia Murray (2016), and Nadia Mossong (2011).
"Danielle was an instrumental piece to our team, she really grew in her leadership and defensive roles helping us get to 18 wins on the season," said EKU head coach
Greg Todd. "I'm extremely proud of how hard she worked, overcoming adversities on and off the court, and I can't wait to watch her flourish in Europe."
Rainey capped a seven-year collegiate career last season in Richmond helping the Colonels to an 18-14 record, 12-3 record at home, and their second consecutive trip to the ASUN Conference semifinals.
During the 2022-23 season, the D.C. native averaged 12.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists appearing in all 32 of EKU's contests. She scored her 1,000th career point in a win over North Florida to end the regular season, having previous stops with Florida, Eastern Michigan, and TCU.
Rainey netted the first triple-double in EKU women's basketball history with 16 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 110-49 win over Alice Lloyd College. She was one of 28 players in all of NCAAW to record a triple-double last season.
She recorded 20 games scoring in double figures, including 30 points in a home win over App State and 22 points in a win over UNF.
"I'm super proud for Danielle to start her career as a pro," said EKU assistant coach
Coretta Brown. "She is one of the most talented players I've ever coached and very deserving of this opportunity. Excited to see her continue to grow for longevity in her professional career."
Rainey is scheduled to report to Subotica in September to get acclimated to the area and begin practice. The team's schedule begins in October and runs through March as the FLS tournament begins later in the month.
Danielle graduated from EKU with a certificate in criminal justice.
