RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will host Western Kentucky and Berea in consecutive games on Wednesday. The Battle of the Bluegrass begins at 12:00 p.m. while the Battle of Madison County gets underway at 3:30 p.m. The doubleheader is the Colonels’ final tune up before they begin conference play this weekend at Austin Peay.
EKU enters Wednesday on a four-game win streak, the Colonels longest win streak since April of last year. The team has compiled 63 hits and is batting a sizzling .409 during the streak.
Senior
Matt Davis, in particular, has been swinging a hot bat from the leadoff spot. The Mt. Prospect, Ill native is hitting .556 over the last four games with six runs, two stolen bases, two triples, a double, a home run and a slugging percentage of 1.000. He is also in the midst of a nine game hit steak, the longest by any Colonel this season.
Freshmen
Richie Rodriguez and
Jacob Daniel have also emerged during the Colonels’ run. Rodriguez has started every game at shortstop for EKU this season but just recently found his groove at the plate, batting .533 over the last four games with six runs, two doubles and a triple. Daniel, on the other hand, was inserted into the lineup as a designated hitter during the four game win streak and the move has paid dividends. The Russellville, Ala. native is hitting .462 and has driven in four runs since his insertion.
EKU’s starting pitching has also improved during the win streak. Junior
Chris Hord (1-1) picked up his first win of the season against UCONN on Friday and recorded the first save of his career against Vermont on Wednesday. Sophomore
Paul Duncan (2-2), meanwhile, picked up the win on against Toledo on Saturday, going five strong innings and allowing just one run on two hits.
WKU leads the all time series between the two schools, 71-58-2; however, the Colonels have won the last two meetings, including a 9-5 decision last season in Bowling Green.
The Hilltoppers won the Sun Belt Conference tournament last year and are led by a host of returners from that team, including Terrence Dayleg, Wade Gaynor and Chad Cregar.
The Colonels are 4-0 against Berea since 2003 and defeated the Mountaineers last year by a score of 17-9. Berea is led by sophomore outfielder Aaron Bee, who is batting .364 with five home runs and 13 RBI.
