CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.
– The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team split its doubleheader with Austin Peay on Saturday at Raymond C. Hand Park. The Colonels (10-6, 1-1 OVC) dropped the first game, 2-1, but hit four home runs in the second game of the day to rally past the Governors, 10-7.

In game two, the Colonels trailed APSU (9-11, 1-1 OVC) 6-1 after just two innings of play; however, they exploded for eight runs in the top half of the third to take a commanding lead. Senior Matt Davis started the rally with a two run single through the left side of the infield that plated freshmen Michael Garcia and Richie Rodriguez. After an RBI single by sophomore Jayson Langfels scored Davis, sophomore Ryan Faidley ripped a two-out, two run double into right center that brought home Langfels and senior Tyler Rehmel. Freshman Jacob Daniel and Garcia then hit back-to-back home runs to drive in a combined three runs and give EKU a 9-6 lead.

Junior Jim Clancy (2-0) received the win for EKU, working five innings and allowing seven runs (only four of them earned) on six hits. Sophomore Matt Fyffe came on in the sixth and pitched the final two innings of the game without allowing a run or a hit.

Jack Snodgrass (2-1) picked up the loss, going just 2.2 innings and giving up eight runs on eight hits.

Langfels led EKU at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. He smashed his team-best sixth home run of the season in the fourth inning. Garcia also had a solid day, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Davis, meanwhile, went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.

Greg Bachman paced APSU offensively, going 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Junior Anthony Ottrando got the Colonels on the board in the first inning with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right field that put EKU up 1-0.

In the home half of the inning, however, the Governors responded with four runs of their own, thanks in large part to two Colonel errors in the infield. Three of the four runs scored that inning were unearned. Bachman then blasted a two-run homer in the second inning to extend the Governors’ lead to 6-1.

After EKU’s offensive explosion in the third, Langfels added an insurance run with a home run to left center in the fourth.

APSU got one run back in the fifth when Trey Lucas scored on a balk; however, Fyffe would shut the Governors down from there to secure the victory.

In game one, Junior Chris Hord (1-2) went the distance in a losing effort. The right-hander worked all eight innings and held the Governors to two runs (one unearned) on six hits, despite not receiving sufficient run support from the Colonel offense.

Ryne Harper (2-1) earned the win, going 7.2 innings and allowing one run on six hits while striking out nine batters.

Junior Joey Stevens paced the Colonels offensively, going 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Trey Lucas, meanwhile, led APSU, going 1-for-2 with an RBI. No batter in the game recorded more than one hit.

Davis singled in the third inning to extend his hit streak to 12 games.

Stevens blasted a solo home run in the top of the second to give the Colonels an early 1-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, however, Adam Browett reached on a two-out error by EKU second baseman Tyler Rehmel, scoring Jon Clinard and tying the game. Then, in the home half of the seventh, Lucas laced an RBI single that plated Matt Kole and gave the Governors the lead.

The Colonels threatened against APSU closer Daniel Tenholder in the ninth; however, with two outs and two men on, Garcia grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

The Colonels will play the deciding game of the series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Sophomore southpaw Paul Duncan is scheduled to take the hill for the Colonels.
