ATHENS, Ohio – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball fell to the Ohio Bobcats on Tuesday afternoon, 6-3, in a non-conference showdown at Bob Wren Stadium. With the loss, the Colonels fall to 11-7 (2-1 OVC) on the season, while Ohio improves its record to 8-10 (2-1 MAC).
Sophomore
Macon Smith (2-1) received the loss for EKU despite a solid outing in which the right-hander worked 3.1 innings of relief and allowed only one run on two hits.
Freshman
Greg Terry made his first career start on Tuesday and allowed three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. Senior
Alex Napier pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up two runs on two hits. Senior
David Owens worked two thirds of the eight for the Colonels and allowed no runs on one hit.
Senior Michael Dillon (1-0) earned the win for the Bobcats, pitching 4.2 innings while giving up just one run on three hits.
Freshman
Jacob Daniel led the Colonels offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman
Richie Rodriguez also compiled two hits in three at-bats.
Adam Gecewhich paced Ohio at the plate, batting 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
EKU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when senior
Matt Davis scored from second on an RBI single by Daniel. The Colonels tried to stretch their lead to two on a single to right by junior Anthony Ottrando; however, Daniel was thrown out at home while trying to score.
Ohio scored two in the home half of the first to take the lead. Marc Krauss drove in the first run with a double off the wall in left center that brought home Gauntlett Eldemire. Robert Maddox III then scored Krauss with a sacrifice fly to center that made it 2-1.
The Colonels pieced together a two-out rally in the third to tie the score. After Rodriguez went down on strikes and Davis flew out to center, Daniel laced a single up the middle and advanced to second when senior Tyler Rehmel was a hit by a pitch. Sophomore Jayson Langfels then ripped an RBI single into right center that plated Daniel and knotted the score.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats retook the lead when Adam Gecewich laced a single up the middle to make it 3-2. After Terry registered a force out at third, he was replaced by Smith, who retired the next two batters consecutively to silence the rally.
EKU tied it in the top of half of the sixth when Rehmel scored on a throwing error by Bobcat catcher Kris McDonough. The Colonels would have taken the lead on a sacrifice fly to left by sophomore Ryan Faidley, but Ottrando left third too early and was called out to end the inning.
The Bobcats again went ahead in the bottom of the seventh when Maddox III ripped a double down the left field line that scored Hayden Johnston and made the score 4-3. They added two more insurance runs in the eighth when Zach Keen scored McDonough with a bunt single. Gecewhich also scored on a throwing error during the play.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow, March 25, when they host Marshall at Turkey Hughes Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
