RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will try to continue its winning ways this weekend when the Colonels host conference foe UT Martin in a three game series at Turkey Hughes Field. EKU (16-8, 4-2 OVC) has won 13 of its last 16 games and is currently tied for third place in the OVC.
UT Martin (9-14, 0-3 OVC), meanwhile, enters the weekend having dropped four straight. The Skyhawks were swept last weekend by Southeast Missouri State.
EKU leads the all-time series between the two schools, 36-11. The Colonels took two of three from UT Martin last year at Martin.
The Colonels are paced by their offense. They average more than 11 runs per game and their .375 team batting average is tops in the OVC.
Senior
Matt Davis is the motor behind that explosive offense. The speedy leadoff man is hitting .441 with five home runs, three triples and eight doubles to accompany a .520 on-base percentage. He has also swiped 14 bases and scored an OVC-best 43 runs.
Sophomore third baseman
Jayson Langfels provides the power. Langfels is batting .441 with a team-best nine home runs and 43 RBI. He is also one of the OVC’s leaders with a .863 slugging percentage.
Senior
Tyler Rehmel and junior
Anthony Ottrando have also been swinging hot bats. Rehmel is batting .419 while Ottrando batted .550 last week with 10 runs driven in.
The Colonels’ rotation for the weekend will most likely be RHP
Chris Hord (1-2), RHP
Jim Clancy (2-1) and LHP
Paul Duncan (4-2).
UT Martin is led at the plate by Scott Gladstone, who carries a .417 batting average into this weekend to accompany three home runs and five doubles. The twins, Mark and Miles Hartsfield, are batting .416 and .400, respectively. Mark leads the Skyhawks with seven home runs.
Saturday’s doubleheader is set to get underway at 1:00 p.m. Sunday’s game is also set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
