RICHMOND, Ky.
– The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will host the Dayton Flyers in its last home game of the season today at Turkey Hughes Field. The midweek non-conference matchup is set to get underway at 3:00 p.m.

Following today's midweek tuneup, the Colonels will head to Charleston, Ill. over the weekend to face the first-place Eastern Illinois Panthers in their final conference series of 2009. It is a series that will likely determine the Colonels' postseason chances.

The Colonels (26-21, 9-11 OVC) have won 13 consecutive non-conference home games since dropping their season opener to Oakland at Turkey Hughes Field on February 21.

EKU beat Dayton at Dayton last year, 10-4, and current Colonels Aaron Barrows and Ryan Faidley played a large role in that win. Barrows went 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored while Faidley was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Colonels are 6-1 against the Flyers dating back to 1984.

The 2009 Colonels have been defined by their explosive offense. EKU sits in the top-10 nationally in team batting average (.350) and scoring (9.6 rpg).

Sophomore Jayson Langfels leads that explosive offense. The hard-hitting third baseman currently leads the OVC in batting average (.458), RBI (68), on-base percentage (.506) and slugging percentage (.830), and he should be a prime candidate for conference Player of the Year. Langfels’ 1.79 RBI per game puts him among the national leaders in that category.

Another Colonel among the country’s statistical leaders is senior Matt Davis. The speedy leadoff man is batting .418 with 69 runs scored. His 1.53 runs per game leads the nation.

Sophomore righty Macon Smith will start on the hill for EKU today, although several pitchers on staff will probably see time during the game. Smith is 3-1 this year with a 6.19 ERA.

Dayton enters Tuesday with a record of 35-15 (20-4 A-10). The Flyers are currently in first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Dayton is led at the plate by Jimmy Roesinger (.411) and Max Navalinski (.394).
