RICHMOND, Ky. – On a cool and drizzly Saturday afternoon, the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team finished the three-game sweep over Chicago State with a pair of convincing victories – 15-0 and 10-1. Sophomore
Paul Duncan threw a no-hitter in the opening game while striking out eight Cougars.
Duncan (6-5) faced just two batters over the minimum through the seven-inning game. The lefty walked the lead-off hitter to open the game and also walked a batter in the fifth. Duncan finished the game in style, striking out four of the final five Chicago State batters. The native of Northfield, Ill., is the sixth Colonel to throw a no-hitter and first since Christian Friedrich blanked Morehead State on March 26, 2006.
Eastern blew open the first game with six runs in the second inning. Sophomore
Jayson Langfels capped the frame with a two-run blast to left-center field.
Senior
Tyler Rehmel was a home run short of the cycle in game one while freshman
Richie Rodriguez recorded a pair of doubles to go along with four RBIs.
In game two, the Colonels plated two runs in the first and five more in the second inning to quickly pull away from Chicago State. Senior
Aaron Barrows accounted for three of the seven runs with an RBI triple in the first and a two-run single in the second. Langfels added a two-run double in the second to put EKU ahead, 7-0.
Sophomore pitcher
Matt Fyffe (4-4) allowed one hit through six innings to pick up the win. The righty struck out six CSU batters while giving up only one walk.
With the two wins, Eastern Kentucky improves to 24-20 this spring. Chicago State’s record falls to 3-38.
The Colonels return to conference action next weekend when EKU hosts Southeast Missouri. The two teams will open with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 9 beginning at 1 p.m.
