RICHMOND, Ky. – After an inauspicious weekend for both parties, the Colonel pitching staff scattered six hits and allowed only three runs and the Colonel defense was immaculate as the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team defeated Miami University, 7-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field.
The win snaps a four game losing streak for the Colonels and improves their record to 8-10. The loss drops the RedHawks to 8-10.
Sophomore southpaw
Greg Terry (2-1) picked up the win, pitching six strong innings and allowing just three runs on five hits.
Sophomore right-hander
Matt Harris spelled Terry in the seventh and pitched two innings of perfect middle relief, retiring the side in order in the seventh and eighth.
After junior right-hander
Macon Smith started the ninth and allowed two base runners with no outs, the Colonels turned to sophomore right-hander
Eric Sanders, who earned his first career save by pitching out of the jam without allowing a run and ending the game.
The Colonels did not commit an error in the game for the first time since they defeated Purdue, 5-2, on March 16.
Joe Neff (1-1) received the loss for Miami, working just two innings and surrendering five runs on six hits.
Juniors
Jayson Langfels and
Richie Allen and sophomore
Jacob Daniel all collected two hits on the day for EKU while senior
Anthony Ottrando and
Michael Garcia drove in two runs apiece.
Ryan Curl paced the Miami offense, hitting two doubles and scoring two runs.
Miami jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Curl led off the game with a double, scored on an RBI base hit by Adam Eaton and then watched as his teammate Brad Gschwind scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Brooks Fiala.
However, the Colonels plated four in the bottom half of the inning to take a lead they would not surrender. With one out in the inning, Daniel singled and then went to second on an infield hit by Langfels. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Ottrando lofted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Daniel and sent Langfels to third. Junior
Ryan Faidley then tied the game with a single up the middle that scored Langfels, and after Allen got aboard with a base hit, Garcia gave EKU the lead with a two-out, two-run single into center field.
After EKU added another on an RBI groundout by Ottrando in the second, the RedHawks matched that run in the fifth as Gschwind laced an RBI base hit into left field.
EKU, however, plated a run in the fifth and one more in the sixth off a mammoth solo home run by senior
Joey Stevens, and then held on for the win.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow when they travel to Oxford to face the RedHawks again in the second game of this week’s home-and home series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
