RICHMOND, Ky. – After being swept on the road at the hands of conference rival Morehead State last weekend, the Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will try to get back on track this week by returning to the friendly confines of Turkey Hughes Field. The Colonels, who are 9-4 at home this season, will host the University of the Cumberlands at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Following the offensive melee that took place at Allen Field last weekend, the Colonels (18-18) enter this week batting a season-high .314 as a team.
Junior
Jayson Langfels continues to lead the team offensively as he is batting .408 with 12 home runs, 12 doubles and 48 runs scored. Sophomore
Richie Rodriguez is second on the squad with a .380 batting average and a team-best 11 stolen bases. Senior
Anthony Ottrando and junior
Ryan Faidley have provided sufficient power in the middle of the lineup as Ottrando has 11 home runs and a team-high 50 RBI while Faidley has 10 home runs after hitting exactly zero in his first two seasons at EKU.
Sophomore
Jacob Daniel has recently come alive with the bat. The designated hitter from Russellville, Ala. hit .500 (10-for-20) this past week with four home runs, including a grand slam, and nine RBI. He is now fifth on the team with a .319 batting average.
Junior right-hander
Macon Smith (0-0, 10.73 ERA) will start on the mound for the Colonels. Smith is a former player at the University of the Cumberlands.
The Patriots enter this week with a record of 24-25. They are hitting an impressive .338 as a team. Devin Hicks leads the Cumberlands with a .390 batting average while Kyle Cochis has recorded a team-best 44 RBI.
