GAME TWO: BOX SCORE I PLAY-BY-PLAY

COOKEVILLE, Tenn.
– The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team was swept in an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader with Tennessee Tech on Saturday afternoon at Bush Stadium, losing game one, 10-3, before dropping game two, 10-4.

The Colonels will attempt to salvage game three tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. EST with senior ace Stephen Hefler on the mound.

EKU (14-29, 6-11 OVC) fell behind early in game one, 5-0, pulled to within two runs of TTU (19-21, 8-6 OVC) in the top of the fourth but never scored again as the Golden Eagles slowly pulled away over the final five innings of the game.

Senior right-hander Chris Hord (1-2) made his first start of the season in game one and got the loss, going just three innings and allowing five runs on five hits. Garrett Baugh (3-1) earned the win for TTU, spelling starter Tristan Archer in the fourth inning and holding EKU scoreless over the next 4.1 innings while allowing only one hit.

Junior Richie Rodriguez batted 2-for-5 with an RBI while freshman Bryan Soloman went 2-for-4 in the game. Chad Oberacker paced the TTU offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

After Hord surrendered two runs in the first inning and three more in the third, EKU rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth to pull within two. Junior Michael Garcia was hit by a pitch to open the frame and, after going to second on a base hit by sophomore Austin Grisham, scored on a single down the left field line by sophomore Matt Phipps. Following a balk that advanced both Grisham and Phipps, Grisham scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Steve Ferraro and Phipps scored on an RBI base hit by Rodriguez that made it 5-3.

EKU managed only one hit over the last five innings of the game, however, as TTU slowly stretched its lead and secured the win.

TTU also struck early in game two, scoring eight runs in the first two innings to take a commanding lead in the seven-inning game.

Freshman Kyle McGrath (3-4) got the loss, pitching just the first inning and allowing five runs on three hits. Junior right-hander Matt Fyffe worked the final five innings of the game and surrendered five runs on six hits while striking out four batters. With a sizeable lead with which to work, Matt Shepherd (3-4) pitched a complete game for the Golden Eagles, working all seven innings and allowing four runs on six hits.

Sophomore Alex Hughes drove in a pair of runs for the Colonels in game two, while Soloman and Garcia both smashed solo home runs. Zephan Guyear and Zach Stephens drove in three runs apiece to lead TTU in the winning effort.

After TTU plated five runs in the bottom of the first, EKU responded in the top of the second when Soloman and Garcia crushed back-to-back solo home runs to pull the Colonels to within three, 5-2. The Golden Eagles scored three in the home half of that inning, though, and EKU could not muster any offense again until the top of the seventh when Hughes belted pinch-hit, two-run double to center that scored Phipps and freshman Alex Arovits to make the score 10-4.
