SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Eastern Kentucky University baseball team will open a three-game set at Wofford with a game tonight at 6:00 p.m. First pitch on Saturday is set for 3:00 p.m., while Sunday’s series finale is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
EKU (4-8) had lost seven of its last eight until beating UNC Greensboro, 6-5, in extra innings on Wednesday afternoon. Senior
Jacob Daniel provided the game-winning RBI single in that game. Three of EKU’s four wins this season have come in extra innings, and senior right-hander
Matt Fyffe (3-0, 1.12 ERA) has been the winning pitcher in all three of those extra-innings games.
EKU’s starting pitching has been vulnerable early in the season. Colonel starters are 1-8 with an 8.70 ERA, while the Colonel bullpen is 3-0 with a 4.72 ERA. To that end, this weekend’s rotation has been adjusted. Senior right-hander
Matt Harris (0-2) and junior left-hander
Shane Grimm (0-3) will start games one and three, per the norm, but senior left-hander
Greg Terry (1-0) will start game two. Terry has seen most of his time out of the bullpen this spring, but in his lone start, he tossed a complete game gem against East Tennessee State on February 18.
EKU has been one of the best home run-hitting teams in the country so far this season. The Colonels have smacked 21 round-trippers and are slugging .481 entering this weekend’s series. Senior
Richie Rodriguez leads the EKU offense with a .383 batting average, seven home runs, 16 RBI, 13 runs scored and four stolen bases.
Wofford (7-6) had dropped two straight before beat Presbyterian, 5-4, on Thursday. The Terriers are led by Mac Doyle, who comes into the weekend batting .412 with three home runs, 12 RBI and 14 runs scored.
Wofford’s rotation for the weekend looks like this: left-hander Cash Collins (1-2) on Friday, right-hander Jessie Morrie (0-0) on Saturday and left-hander Pete Noordsy (1-0) on Sunday.
Following this weekend’s series, EKU has next week off before hosting Bowling Green State in a three-game set at Turkey Hughes Field next weekend.
